Malevolence is kind of weird and stupidly complicated and even Eggy's explanation is incomplete due to how much the game failed us but-- malevolence isn't necessarily evil or in bad people, but rather arises from conflict. It's internal, negative thoughts or emotions that might conflict with the person's sense of self or usual morals. Like, a cold-blooded assassin can have literally zero malevolence because they genuinely believe they're doing the right thing, but a "good" person can develop malevolence by feeling resentment due to a negative change in their lifestyle.
