[Oh. Right. People usually ask that, and at this point, Stefan can't say he's a superhero or a Pretty Cure. Literally no one's heard of them.]

You don't? [Hm.] Do you know what what werewolves or witches are?

Witches... that's familiar. I might've read about them in a book once. But I've fought with a werewolf hellion before.

Okay, well... where I come from, they're all real. A witch is someone who can cast magic. A werewolf's someone who transforms into a wolf during the full moon, and a vampire's someone who's immortal.

[He shouldn't gloss over the "drinks blood to live" part, but every time he does, he's usually met with fear and derision.]

I don't usually tell people what I am, though.

The pool of people I could tell is quite small, for obvious reasons.

[Hard to share secrets when people can't see or hear you.]

Regardless, I won't spread it around. But if it happens to come up with Sorey, I won't lie, either. I don't keep secrets from him.

[Sorey could probably tell if he was hiding it, anyway, so there'd be no sense in trying.]

Well, Sorey's also not in the business of killing vampires.

Or at least, if he is, he hasn't told me.

Sorey's not in the business of killing anyone. A Shepherd's duty is to purify, not slay.

Huh. [That's honestly the first Stefan's heard of it.] I'll keep that in mind.

Unfortunately for me, some people are and I've been on the receiving end more than a few times.

I... see.

[That's... really unfortunate. For multiple reasons, actually.]

If there are people here who want to kill immortals, perhaps I should be more careful of who I tell what I am.

Maybe, but in my experience, they're more focused on vampires. When we get violent, it uh - it doesn't end well.

[He rubs his elbows, his gaze falling back to the apple gels.]

What do you call the first ingredient again?

[Huh. Very unlike seraphim, then, aside from when they become hellions. There must be other differences that he's not aware of.

Well, it's not really important now. He considers the list again, tapping a finger to his chin.]

We use a gel base culled from sea-dwelling creatures. It's called agar.

Hm. That might be where I'm off. I use agar more for growing samples than a base for medicine.

[Or making jell-o, whenever someone on the Paisley wanted it. He nods, double-checking his list. Agar's there, but so is the item he used as his base.]

I used pectin instead. Figured, if it was fruit-flavored, it was the likely culprit.

Try it in the next batch, then, with the other ingredients you've been working with, and I can supervise. If consistency is your main problem, that should resolve it.

Got it. There's a bit of a flavor issue, but I don't know if that's me necessarily so much as what's available on the Fleet.

[Apple-flavor isn't exactly the most common one around here.]

Don't worry about flavour, it doesn't affect the healing properties. In our world, there are multiple kinds of gels with varying effects, and they're identified by colour and taste. We call these "apple gels" because they're red and taste like apples. Here, if that particular flavour isn't available, you can either leave the flavour out or choose a substitute. What matters is consistency.

[A beat, and then-]

I'd definitely add some kind of flavour, though. Gels are gross without it.

That would be a good way to tell them apart. [He's committing all of this to memory, because these are good points! If not apples, then at least something similar to them. Once they've mastered basic gels, he figures they'll get back up to speed and make more varieties.]

I wasn't planning on skipping the flavor. Don't worry. I figure for now, I'll use what I have and see if I can buy Apple flavoring somewhere.

If you choose a red-coloured flavour, they'll blend in with the apple if you get one later on. Other flavours of gels are peach, grape, and melon, so if you happen to see anything like that, they'd at least be familiar. Otherwise, they can also be substituted.
